The Truth
Cemetery plot costs in Alabama vary significantly by location, with prices ranging from around $300 for a single plot in some public cemeteries to over $5,000 or more for plots in private cemeteries, with many plots costing several thousand dollars for a pair of spaces.
In Alabama, when a baby dies before 20 weeks of pregnancy, there is no legal requirement to have a burial or cremation. Before 20 weeks, a baby is called a “specimen” and left with pathology.
Pathology will weigh, measure, and look for abnormalities that caused this tragedy to occur in the first place; and after that, the specimens are marked for Hazardous/Medical Waste, in the event that there are no burial or cremation arrangements.
Medical human waste is segregated, treated to become non-infectious using methods like incineration, and then disposed of according to regulations in landfills or sewer systems.
